Pi says, "It's important in life to conclude things properly. Only then can you let go" (Martell 285). Discuss the truth of these words in both the book and in life.

Pi says these words right after him and Richard Parker land in Mexico. Richard Parker hops over Pi and runs towards the end of a jungle, stares puzzled for awhile, and then runs to the forest, never to see Pi again. Pi is very depressed that is long time companion who kept him alive and strong, has left him without even a simple goodbye. Without having a correct conclusion, Pi will forever think about his last moments with Richard Parker and all the emotions they could have expressd. By saying goodbye in the book and life in general, a person can move on and always remember that part of their past.
When Pi reaches the shore of Mexico, Richard Parker leaves hom to run into the woods. Pi becomes upset by this because he did not get to say goodbye properly. In his head, he thinks about what he wishes he would have said. "...So farewell, Richard Parker, farewell. God be with you" (Martel 286). This reflects back to what Pi says about how in life it is important to end things and move on. When Richard Parker leaves Pi, he feels upset because he did not say goodbye so he feels as though he can not move on. This is like real life situations when people that are important to you pass away.
For the book, this quote is extremely important. Pi was stranded for seven months and if he were to leave his feelings about the experience up front as if he was still stuck on that life boat, he would never be able to move on. Most people need closure in order to seperate themselves from a past event and go on with their normal lives. That is what is meant by the quote. In life, however, it is not always that simple.
Pi spent 227 days stranded in the Pacific ocean with Richard Parker on a lifeboat. Throught the ordeal, he had to find ways to survive. This meant going against his beliefs as a vegetarian and taking on savage-like characteristics. The whole time Pi also had to find a way to survive with Richard Parker and not get attacked. They formed some type of relationship and coexisted with one another. Once Pi landed on land, his tale of survival and lonliness was over. Pi needed to conclude this properly, as well as his relationship with Richard Parker, in order to feel complete. He needed to feel like that part of his life was over so he could move on in his life. This is true in life because people want closure. They want to have all the answers and let go of the past. This is why properly concluding part of life is so important. It gives the ability to feel whole.
Pi is stranded in the Pacific ocean for a very long time in a lifeboat with a tiger. Throughout the whole story, there are many things that Pi needs to understand in order to survive. When Pi first gets into the lifeboat, he is scared of Richard Parker and the other animals, because they are wild and he is afraid they will kill him. He finally realizes that he must overcome his fear of the tiger in order to stay alive. "Because if you don't, if your fear becomes a worldess darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you" (Martel 162). He finally understood fear, which allowed him to let go of beign afraid and ready to use the tiger to stay alive. In life, in order ti fully let go, a person must accept the result and move on. If one misunderstands the result of an action or event, it will stay with a person until they are able to coem to terms with it, and that is why people must understand fully before being able to move on.
The truth of these words in the book is when Pi says that in order to move on you have to put situations to an end. Otherwise, you will be left with words unsaid and it will haunt your conscience forvever. Pi wishes that he could have said goodbye to Richard Parker for he was the one thing that kept him alive andfilledhim with hope. The truth of these words also brings a meaning to life because in order to move on you must move foward first and forget what happened in the past and not worry about what you should have said or should have done. -Athena
I believe Pi's words are true. It is difficult to let go of something if you never really had a chance to end things the right way. When Richard Parker disappears into the jungle without so much as a glance at Pi, he is miserable. He thinks that their relationship was something profound, and that he wanted to thank him for keeping him alive and motivated. Though he was only an animal, Pi felt a strong connection to him and wanted some form of closure. In life, the same rule applies. It's hard to move on without saying goodbye, whether its a person or a tiger.
The idea to apply things properly and then they can be let go it s true testiment to life, and the book . Since Pi is in the situation that he may not live, and therefore he values, and at the same time despises where he is in his life. Pi finds himself valuing life, and the means to survive. Allowing himself to accept the perdictiment that he is in, and turns to ways to keep himself occupied. Pi allows himeself to encapture religions that will determine his fate if he dies.
In life people have to do that same thing, as Pi did. People need to come to a realixation that stuff happens in life, and its our job not to dwell on it, but move foward from it. Therefore, when you accept the fact of life. ITs so much easier to move foward and not contemplate in the past. In that case people grow from the experience, and can then find a soultion to the problem more clearly and rationally.
Pi's words are those dealing with closeure. He expresses how if you are unable to find that certain closure, it will forever be a burden on your heart. Pi struggles with the fact that he never got to say his last words to Richard Parker before he left him and reveals that parting with him still causes pain to him today. Often times in life we are overcome with the "what-if" factor. Whether it is "what if i said-instead of-" or "what if i did-" It has tendency to bother us without measure because no matter how many times we reevaluate the situation, it will remain that of the past and never will you be able to do it over again. For this reason we are often taught to act on our first instincts.
I agree Pi was very upset when Richard just went into the jungle with out ever looking back. Later Pi regrets never saying good bye to Richard and talking about how the two of them have survived and how he couldn't have done it with out Richard Parker. In life people always regret not seeing someone after their death or if the last words they say to them are mean. -Squirtle
When Pi makes this statement he is heavy laden with the thought of Richard Parker's death, but not only this but with thought there a was no closer to his situation. Pi is upset that he did not have to a chance to say goodbye to the tiger before his slaying and because of this he makes that statement. In Pi's mind he believes Richard parker saved him from death just as he kept Richard alive. This symbiotic relationship had significant meaning for Pi, meaning that deeply affected him when he discovered the tiger's death. As in the story this is true also in reality. It is often difficult to move on from various fights and regrets if there is no closer. For example, if a person's relative dies before they are able to apologize for something they may have, this burden could plague them for the rest of their life. This is how Pi feels.
When someone leaves something unfinished, then it will come to haunt them for the rest of thier lives. Pi spent many months with Richard Parker and they had develpoed a companionship like no other. Now Pi will forever be haunted by the fact that he never truly got to end this companionship with the beast. Richard Parker will always be a part of him becuase of this reason. This is true in real life, when someone loses a friend without properly ending it, the person will often find themself missing the other person and thinking about them. They are always wishing that they could go back in time and try to end things completly.
Pi says that it is important to conclude things properly after Richard Parker runs into the jungle. Pi is upset because he knows he will never see Richard Parker again and never got a chance to say goodbye. Pi says these words as a means of closure. Every situation needs closure. When a loved one passes, those who are left behind often think of the things that were said, but even more about the things that were left unsaid. Wondering if that person knew how they really felt. Pi does not believe that people should have to feel that guilt or regret so he says that you can only let things go when there is a proper ending.
i agree with calypso, Pi's motive for saying that qoute was because he wishes that he could have some kind of closure with the richard parker. They have a bond that no one will or can ever take away from them, that 227 day experience in the open sea. And he wanted to atleast be able to part ways repectfully, to know that in the end the respect between the two was mutual. In life, the last thing you say in a conversation is usually what lingers the most, so its important to end things right, not leave any loose ends. Mclovin
Pi understands that he will never ever forget the days he spent at sea with Richard Parker and how miraculous it was that he even survived those das with him. He has to come to terms with the fact that the lifestyle he knew with his family will forever be left at the bottom of the sea. He has to start fresh and new and can only move on once he realizes that he has nothing to go back to, no family, no animals, nothing. He and Richard Parker were the sole survivors and he was never to see his companion again. No other human would understand his attatchment with the creature, so its only fair for him to just move on.
Pi says these words after Richard Parker ran into the forest without saying goodbye. These words are true because when things have a closure, one feels that they have said everything that needs to be said. Pi feels that he did not tell Richard Parker everything he wanted to tell him. Pi than says what he wanted to say aloud and he feels better to have gotten it off of his chest. This is true in life because everything has a closure: that is why we have funerals.
Pi said this in refrence to Richard Parker's sudden disappearance after they finally reached land. Pi cannot let go of Richard Parker because he was not able to say a proper goodbye; which means that Pi will miss him and not be able to stop thinking about Richard Parker. Without goodbyes, everything seems to be left open and a final goodbye is what some people need to move on in their life.
The importance in the book is that Pi had to accept things in their chronological order and then he can finally let go of the issues. Pi is summing up how if he cannot let his feelings or issues go, he will be forced to dwell on them forever. He has accepted the fact that his family is dead and he moved on to surviving in the ocean. He has also accepted that fact that Richard Parker is leaving him forever, but Pi has moved on to being saved in Mexico.
This line is, I believe, alluding to When Richard Parker runs off into the woods. Pi is upset that his companion of the past 7 months would just take off never to be seen again. I believe that Pi's words do hold some truth in the world we live in today. People are always upset and bothered when they are not able to have that one last goodbye with the people that they love. -ZEUS
In the story Pie is refering primarily to his farewell with Richard Parker that never occurred. As he lay crying on the beach he wished that he had been able to properly say goodbye to the friend who had acctually ended up keeping him alive for those long days away at sea. Pie also ties this statement into life in general. He says that people must always end things properly or else they way wish they had said or done something else. Then they may regret this for a lifetime.
There is a huge meaning by Pi's quote. In this book Pi makes many assumptionsand most of them are false. Just like when he first saw Richard Parker, he was afraid and thought he was going to eat him but he eventaully did not. So Pi says this becuase he has to coclude things in the right way and not make bad assumtions. There is a truth in life also. Again you have to get to know people before you make horrible judgments. You also should not make judgments by just looking at a person you need to get to know their personality first. -Leonardo

This quote is also very true in life because it is always good to conclude things with others.
